Letter to Parents: August 11, 2008
Dear Parents/Guardians:
The City of Palos Verdes Estates has taken additional steps to limit parking around Palos
Verdes High School. Parking on Paseo Del Mar will now be restricted as well as the south
side of Cloyden Road. A map of the "Restricted Parking Zone" (RPZ) around the high
school has been posted on Edline and the school's web site (www.pvhigh.com/pdf/).
Parking is available on campus and on the streets directly adjacent to the school (Cloyden
Road, Via Pacheco, and Epping Road). Additional parking spaces have been added on
campus and public parking is available at the Lunada Bay Little League Field, along Palos
Verdes Drive West and Via Coronel.
The City of Palos Verdes Estates is studying if parking spaces along Via Pacheco should
be changed from parallel parking to diagonal parking; however, this change will not meet
the demand for parking if a large number of students continue to drive cars to school.
With fewer parking options around the school, reducing traffic will also improve the quality
of life in the community. We encourage students and parents to consider other alternatives
to driving to campus, including carpooling. As an incentive, there are parking spaces in the
front parking lot specifically designated for students who carpool. Please remember,
many young students are restricted by the California Vehicle Code from having
passengers in the car when they are driving.
The District has identified the following web site as a resource to assist families in setting
up carpools.
With "Divide the Ride" you can easily create a kids' carpool with families you know and
trust.
Divide the Ride was designed for busy parents with busy kids. It's free, secure and easy
to use! Simply invite parents you know and trust to join your carpool. Once everyone is
on board, Divide The Ride evaluates everyone's driving availability and creates a
carpool calendar for you. Divide the Ride makes sure the driving assignments are evenly
distributed among participating parents. If a conflict arises, Divide The Ride will help
locate another parent in your group to drive for you. Not only does Divide The Ride
create the carpool calendar for you, it also keeps you organized and if
anything on the carpool calendar changes, you will be notified via email and text
messages. You will also receive reminders when it's your turn to drive.
Let Divide The Ride lend a hand creating a carpool calendar for you. There is no cost
and your personal information is completely secure.
Please send an e-mail to Barbara Hardesty if you need
assistance with contacting other interested families regarding potential carpools.
You are encouraged to consider:
- Using PV Transit - Information about schedules and rates can be found
at www.palosverdes.com/pvtransit.
- Walking.
- Riding a bike -- a secure bike rack is available near the main office.
Finally, to improve traffic flow on and off the campus, parents and students must enter the
school campus from Cloyden Road and exit on Epping Road from 7:30 - 8:30 a.m.
Employees will be encouraged to enter the school at the service road entrance on Epping
Road.
As we plan for the future, District leaders will also explore:
- With city leaders, grants that may provide safe routes to schools.
- Other District owned property to address school parking needs.
We are looking forward to another great year for Palos Verdes High School and its
students. Principal Chris Bowles and his staff have worked hard to make the school one of
the best public high schools in the nation. The Board of Education and I are very proud of
what the school has accomplished and that it welcomes all high school students in the
District As the student population of Palos Verdes High has grown, parking and traffic
problems for the neighborhood and its residents have surfaced. We all need to work
together to reduce vehicle traffic around the school and be good neighbors to the residents
in our area.
Please e-mail me at supt@pvpusd.k12.ca.us if you have any feedback on this subject. Any
suggestions are appreciated.
Sincerely,
Walker Williams
Superintendent of Schools
