Learn About the FAFSA and Options for Financial Aid
The only way to know whether or not you qualify for Need-Based Financial Aid is to apply. There is NO CHARGE and NO OBLIGATION to submit the FAFSA ( Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Paper Worksheets are available in the PVHS College and Career Center. The actual FAFSA should be filed on-line, beginning January 1st of each year. Before you can submit your FAFSA on-line, you must apply for a Personal Identification Number ( PIN). The student and at least one parent must each apply for a PIN. Even if you do not think you will qualify for Federal Student Aid, completing the FAFSA is often a prerequisite to applying for other scholarships, including programs that consider a combination of merit and need. In addition to the FAFSA, many private colleges and universities will require a completed CSS Profile in order for students to be considered for financial aid. You can get more information on the FAFSA and the CSS Profile in the College and Career Center, or by visiting the following websites: www.fafsa.ed.gov ( For FAFSA and for the FAFSA Forecaster) www.collegeboard.com ( for CSS Profile) Beyond need-based grants and loans, scholarships are available at the local, state and national level, often using a combination of Need-Based and Merit-Based measures. In addition, most 2-year colleges, 4-year colleges and trade or technical programs offer specific scholarship opportunities for admitted students. It’s important to plan ahead and prepare an accurate picture of your family’s financial situation as well as an estimate of what it will cost for you to attend college.
