Letter from the PTSA President

Palos Verdes High School PTSA
February 2010

“Love is that condition in which the happiness of another person is essential to your own.”
--Robert A. Heinlein

This quote reminded me of all the fine work so many parents do each day for PVHS – beyond helping their own child succeed, they have committed their time to helping all our students – ‘Every Child, One Voice’, is the PTA motto and it is alive and well here with the Sea Kings.

We’ve talked this year at the PTSA meetings about the 3-pronged approach to supporting the continuing excellence in academics, athletics, and arts.  PTSA, Booster Club and PEF, all work closely together to provide a wide array of programs for your students that the state doesn’t provide.  One can’t succeed without the other and each one covers different things:  PTSA can’t pay for salaries; PEF can.  Booster Club supports athletics, arts & academics; PTSA supports enrichment programs, safety, disaster prep, etc.

With the newly released state budget, we’ve heard the dismal news that the district must find an ADDITIONAL $3.5MM in cuts this year and another $3.5MM next year; that is after suffering a loss of $700 per child over the last several years of state budget cuts.  We know that families are suffering at home as well and cutting back in every way possible.  To better understand the situation and carefully weigh the options, please attend a Town Hall meeting Wednesday, February 24th, 7pm, Peninsula High School Gym.  More info on Parents Bulletin Board.

This month’s February 23rd PTSA meeting features Catherine Davis, policy director at Yahoo, Inc., visiting from Northern California to bring her words of wisdom on Internet safety.  She gives an overview of the current media space, the risks, and how schools and parents can mitigate these risks.  Once again, we extended an invitation to all three PV middle schools to attend, since this topic is so timely to ‘tweens as well.

PLEASE visit www.pvhigh.com and click on the top right hand button Parents, PTSA to browse the website, read the past issues of The WAVE, and stay up to date.

Valerie Adlam & Mary Ingram, our 2nd vice presidents, hospitality, are the paragon of generosity and fine event planning.  From the lovely teacher appreciation events they put on, to all the ways they roll out the red carpet for the many yearly campus events, we so appreciate them.  Thank you!  This month, they are welcoming the teachers and staff to a Valentine’s lunch on Thursday, February 11th.

See you at the Booster Club’s ‘Catch the Wave’ event – more info in these pages.

Happy Valentine’s Day to all, and happy long weekend with your families! ♥
