Junior Year Checklist Calendar

September |
 Prepare for the PSAT by looking at the practice booklet distributed in
your English classes. You will find additional resources for the PSAT
including an online practice test on the College Board website.

Check the NAVIANCE College Visit calendar for the list of college
admission representatives visiting PVHS. Sign up for any colleges of
interest. Check this calendar regularly through November as the list will
grow as information sessions are scheduled.

October |
 Take the PSAT, get more information...
|
Start planning your college visits. Junior year is a good time to visit
local area colleges to get a feeling about the type of college you will
attend. Large or small, public or private, UC or CSU, etc.
|
 Start researching colleges using NAVIANCE College Search. Look at
college websites and sign up as a prospective student so you are on
their mailing list.
|
November |
 Attend Financial Aid Night (check CCC Calendar for date) with your parents as you begin to research
your options for financial aid, grants, scholarships and loans for college.
|
December |
Attend the PSAT Score Give-Back Night/College Admission Testing
Night
(Check CCC Calendar for date.) for more information about PSAT scores, SAT, ACT and Subject
Tests in preparation for college admission requirements.

  Plan your college admission testing calendar and consider registering
for the March SAT and/or April ACT. Start thinking about accelerating your test preparation. Check out PVHS test preparation resources.

Participate in one of the Alumni Day discussions held in December and
January when former PVHS students now attending college return to
talk to current PVHS students. Check CCC Calendar for date.

January |
Consider taking a full-length practice SAT or ACT as part of your test preparation.
|
February |
Begin or continue your college searching as you start to narrow your
college interest list. Use the PVHS College Counseling Guidebook: Section 5 - Finding the Right Fit, NAVIANCE College Search features and
resources available in the College & Career Center, Room 318.

March |
 Consider taking the SAT for the first time if you feel comfortable with the
level of your classroom learning.
It is highly recommended students take advantage of classroom learning before taking college
admission tests. Both the SAT and ACT are offered in April, May and June if you prefer.

Meet with your counselor during Junior Conferences and discuss
your senior year courses and college prerequisites.
Begin your college
interest list.

Visit the College & Career Center to look up more information on
colleges that interest you.

Consider taking the ACT for the first time.

Meet with your Counselor to finalize your course selections
for senior year.

Register for your courses using NAVIANCE.

Consider visiting college campuses during Spring Break. Review tips for College Visits.

Plan to attend the National Association for College Admission
Counseling (NACAC) College Fair. PVHS has a bus (fee) that takes
students to the fair (check the school calendar and daily bulletin).

Take any appropriate Subject Test that may be required by colleges you
intend to submit an application (or register for the June test date).

 Take any appropriate AP Exams.

June |
Attend College Essay Night. Check CCC Calendar for date.

 Start drafting your college essay/personal statement. Consult PVHS College Counseling Guidebook - Section 9 for help in drafting your essay.

Consider who will write your letters of recommendation (if required) for
your college applications and approach them before you leave school
for the summer. Carefully review PVHS College Counseling Guidebook - Section 10 - Letters of Recommendation.

 Register with the NCAA if you plan to play sports in college to establish
your eligibility and send in your transcript. Get more info in the NCAA Guide for the College Bound Student Athlete.

Summer |
 Organize your applications deadlines.
Carefully organize a timeline if you are planning to apply
Early Decision or Early Action. Consult PVHS College Counseling Guide - Section 8 - Applying to Colleges for information on applying for
Early Decision or Early Action.

Start narrowing down your college list to a realistic number and prepare
for college applications by gathering your family data and update your
resume.
|
Visit college campuses of interest.
|
 Spend the summer doing what you enjoy. Talk to your college friends
home for the summer.
|
Continue your SAT or ACT test preparation and register for the SAT or ACT if you plan to test in September, October or November.
