Update -- 5/12/12 -- Mehra leads the way for Sea Kings at CIF-SS Div. III Prelims.
Senior distance star Rebecca Mehra looked very strong for the Sea Kings in taking her first steps towards an expected spot at the state finals three weeks from now, running 2:16.13 to qualify sixth in the girls 800m and winning her 1600m heat to qualify automatically with the fifth fastest time overall, then anchoring the 4x400m team (Megan Wooley, Kylie Butler, Avery Durko, and Mehra) to a seasonal best of 4:03.99 and a qualifying spot with the seventh fastest time of the day. Senior Jonah Diaz also looked dominant and ready to march his way back to the state finals, winning his 3200m heat to qualify automatically in 9:19.22, the third fastest time overall. Junior Brendan Weaver qualified eighth for the 110m hurdles in 14.80 seconds, and also stands as first alternate in the high jump after finishing tenth in the prelims. Although not qualifying, sophomore hurdler Maile Davis had a great end to her season and showed promise for coming years with a nice 16.71 100m hurdles (new all conditions personal best) and a 48.59 second effort in the 300m hurdles (a new personal best and a new PVHS frosh-soph school record). Sophomore Skylar Thiel and freshman Cassidy Webber also got good experience for coming years in the 3200m prelims, running well through the late afternoon wind at 11:19.71 and 11:18.21 respectively.
Southern Section Division III Finals are next week at Mt. SAC.

Update -- April 26, 2012 -- PV and Peninsula varsity teams split the annual rivalry dual meet at Peninsula.
Nice conditions and a festive atmosphere greeted the PV and Peninsula teams for their annual rivalry meet, hosted this year at Peninsula.
For the varsity boys, PV kept the meet close and actually had the early lead through the first six events thanks to strong efforts in the 1600m from Justin Unno (1st, also 2nd in 800m) and Jonah Diaz (2nd, also 1st 3200m), in the 110m hurdles and high jump from Brendan Weaver (1st in 15.3 seconds and 1st in HJ in 6'0", also 2nd 300m hurdles behind PV teammate Matt Gysel), and in the throws from Austin McGibbon (1st in discus at 113'0", also 2nd in shot put at 39'11"). But Peninsula absorbed the early meet PV attack, hanging in with 1-2 finishes in the 400m and 100m, and ultimately pulled away in the field events to secure the meet, 85-51, with sweeps in the long jump, triple jump, and pole vault.
For the girls, senior Rebecca Mehra and sophomore Cate Ryant were the story for PV, hindered by the absences of thrower Rachelle Suaava sprinter Candace Johnson, and middle distance runner Kylie Butler (although the injured Butler did snag a 2nd in the shot put). Mehra was a true team leader and a workhorse, quadrupling and running the dual meet maximum 3.75 miles in winning the 1600m and 800m, finishing as part of a blanket PV 1-2-3 in the 3200m, and running on the winning 4x400m relay team. Meanwhile, Ryant was contending with the formidable sprinters and jumpers for the Peninsula varsity girls, and came away with ten crucial points (2nd in the 100m at 12.6, 3rd in the 200m at 26.7, 2nd in the long jump at 15'10", and 2nd in the triple jump at 33'0.5" which effectively clinched the meet for PV). Also important for PV were Maile Davis' two victories in the 100m hurdles (16.8 seconds) and 300m hurdles (49.2 seconds). Megan Wooley also impressed for PV in the 400m winning with a nice time of 60.8 seconds through the wind. Peninsula swept the high jump and chipped away with points throughout the sprint and field events to keep things close until the end, but ultimately the PV varsity girls prevailed 74-62.
In efforts to win the varsity levels, a number of frosh-soph athletes were bumped up to varsity, allowing Peninsula to win both frosh-soph divisions comfortably.
Results will be compiled and posted on Edline when available. |

Update -- April 20-21, 2012 -- Eight School Records In Historic Weekend For PVHS Track & Field
The stars aligned -- great conditions, strong competition, and end of season fitness -- and the records rained down for the 2012 PVHS Track & Field team, which rewrote the PVHS record book with five new varsity records and three new frosh-soph records at the Mt. SAC Relays and the South Bay Championships this weekend.
The action got started on Friday night at Mt. SAC as the boys varsity 4x800 team of Daniel Rieger, Mark Sidor, Jonah Diaz, and Justin Unno teamed up for a fourth place finish in the invitational division, running 7:55.99. In sneaking under 7:56, the 2012 team displaced two teams from 1988 and 1990 and claimed the record for themselves, in the process extracting some karmic revenge for missing out on what seemed a sure record at the Mustang Relays a few weeks prior. Not to be outdone, the girls team of Lauren Gagnon, Skylar Thiel, Cassidy Webber, and Rebecca Mehra also took down a record from 1988, running 20:45.57 in the 4x1600m relay, roughly a ten second improvement on the old record and also good for fourth place in this year's Mt. SAC invitational division. Meanwhile, at the Frosh-Soph South Bay Championships at West Torrance, sophomores Anthony Alvarado and Maile Davis were writing a little history of their own. Alvarado blazed 11.63 and 23.74 to get second overall in both the 100m and 200m, and Maile Davis also took second in 48.95. All three marks were new frosh-soph records. Davis also won the GFS long jump and took second in the GFS 100 meter hurdles.
Superstar thrower Shelley Suaava kept the ball rolling on Saturday morning at Mt. SAC, bombing a 40'2.25" shot put to win the seeded division, and in the process improving on her own PVHS girls varsity record and winning a coveted spot in the invitational section later in the day, ultimately finishing sixth overall. Then as dusk fell over the Mt. SAC stadium, the heat of the day gave way to the cool and calm of the evening, and the Sea Kings took advantage of the pristine conditions to notch two more varsity records. The sprint medley (200m-200m-400m-800m) team of Avery Durko, Cate Ryant, Kylie Butler, and Rebecca Mehra scorched a 4:10.92 punctuated by Mehra's dramatic final 50 meters and lean at the finish to nab third place and the accompanying medals, as well as the current #7 position on the 2012 California list. Finally, the boys distance medley team of Justin Unno, Brendan Weaver, Daniel Rieger, and Jonah Diaz brought home another fourth place invitational finish and yet another new school record of 10:17.85, knocking out the 1988 team by about 0.7 seconds.
Perhaps somewhat obscured among all of these records were a number of other outstanding individual performances at the frosh-soph and varsity South Bay Championships, including by: Bennett Gagnon (4th BFS 3200m 10:13.13), Ryan Cosgrove (5th BFS 1600m 4:43.45), Ryland Dreibelbis (7th BV 1600m 4:23.70), Lucas Robinson (10th BV 1600m 4:25.88), Sierra Ponthier (7th GV 800m 2:25.09), and Sara Keller (8th GV 800m 2:26.21).

The Sea Kings will hope to carry all of this momentum into the league season ending rivalry meet with Peninsula on Thursday, followed by Bay League prelims and finals at Redondo on May 1 and May 4.

Update -- April 17, 2012 -- Gutty Performances Brighten Senior / Alumni Day Against West & Leuzinger.
Seniors competing in their last meet on their home track and the rest of the Sea Kings were determined not to let down the alumni group on hand to celebrate the 50th anniversary of PVHS Track & Field, and a series of gutty performances combined to push the Sea Kings to varsity sweeps over West and Leuzinger. The Sea Kings won all frosh-soph divisions as well except for Girls FS vs. West. The scores...
PV-West
BV: 69-67
GV: 87-49
BFS: 78-58
GFS: 24-94
PV-Leuzinger
BV: 91-28
GV: 117-12
BFS: 93-20
GFS: 84-10
Senior Rachelle Suaava established two new PVHS school records in the throws. In the shot put she threw 36'6' and the discus she threw 115'3". These outstanding marks displace marks of 35'7" (Donelle Marsh, 1975) and 105'4" (Courtney Carroll, 2008). Sophomore Cate Ryant won three events (100, 200, LJ). Rebecca Mehra won three events (800, 1600, 3200) and was on the winning 4x4. Maile Davis won both hurdles races. Girls won 87-49. Brendan Weaver, battling an illness, still won both hurdles and HJ and also 2nd overall in LJ (first against West). The distances for the boys outscored a very good West team 19-8. Will Ricci won the shot, and Austin McGibbon won the discus. Mark Sidor was 2nd in the 400 and as against West Anthony Alvarado picked up seven huge points with 3rd in the 100m and a win in the 200m and a third in the long jump.
Individual results will be on Edline once they are available. The Sea Kings now look ahead to the South Bay Championships and the Mt. SAC Relays this weekend.

Update -- April 14, 2012 -- Ryant 400m Victory Highlights LA County Championships For Sea Kings.
Most of the Sea Kings had the weekend off to gear up for the upcoming West-Leuzinger double-dual league meet, Mt. SAC, and South Bay Championships, but a small group of sprinters and hurdlers still competed and found success at Saturday's LA County Championships meet at Warren HS in Downey. Sophomore star Cate Ryant stepped up to the 400 meters for the first time and came up big, winning the entire girls frosh-soph division out of the B heat in an impressive 62.40 seconds. PV also had a couple of nice 400m performances in the girls varsity division from juniors Megan Wooley (61.50) and Avery Durko (a new personal best of 62.60). Maile Davis was second overall for the girls frosh-soph division in the 300m hurdles in 51.12, a nice effort through the wind that picked up in the late afternoon. Davis also medaled in the long jump with a fourth place leap of 15'1". On the boys side, rising sophomore force Anthony Alvarado picked up heat victories in both the 100m (11.84) and 200m (24.31), and he continues to close in on new era PVHS frosh-soph records in both of those events.

Update -- April 5, 6, 7 -- Sea Kings take on nation's best at Arcadia.
A number of the Sea Kings' finest gave their all this weekend against some of the nation's best track and field athletes at the Arcadia Invitational.
Brendan Weaver and Maile Davis got things started on April 5-6 in the multi-events. In the decathlon, riding a strong high jump of 6'3.5" and solid 400m and 1500m times of 52.00 and 4:28, Weaver raised his own PVHS school record to 5470 points, and in the process snagged the last medal position with a sixth place finish in the prestigious meet. Davis, only a sophomore, found the going tougher in the heptathlon but gained valuable experience for coming years.
Friday evening April 6 found a number of PVHS relay teams taking to the track. The boys 4x800 team of Lucas Robinson, Daniel Rieger, Mark Sidor, and Tomas Snur ran tough with a team time of 8:06.97. The girls 4x800 team of Lauren Gagnon, Kylie Butler, Sierra Ponthier, and Cassidy Weber clocked a nice 9:52.46, as well.
Saturday and the always electric night meet brought a strong distance medley from Lauren Gagnon, Megan Wooley, Kylie Butler, and Rebecca Mehra, teaming up for a solid 12:20.98 time. Jonah Diaz pushed the pace in the Invitational 3200m, leading for much of the middle of the race and holding on for an excellent mid-season time of 9:01.42.
The Sea Kings have no league meet this week, and gear up for the LA County Championships on April 14.

Update -- March 31, 2012 -- Great performances and new frosh-soph records highlight Mustang Relays.
Several PVHS athletes enjoyed tremendous days at the Mira Costa Mustang Relays, punctuated by a couple of new PVHS frosh-soph records. In the girls frosh-soph 4x800m relay, Skylar Thiel, Cassidy Webber, Anna Pruter, and Sierra Ponthier finished second in a new record time of 9:53.40, then at the end of the meet sophomore Candace Johnson finished fourth in the girls varsity division of the 300m hurdles with a strong time of 49.17, also good for a new PVHS frosh-soph record. The boys frosh-soph distance medley team (Gagnon, McGuffey, Celestin, and Robinson) finished second in 11:14.35, just shy of that school record as well.
Many other highlights also made the day an enjoyable and exciting one for the Sea Kings. The varsity boys 4x800m team of Brendan Weaver, Jonah Diaz, Mark Sidor, and Justin Unno gave national leader Loyola all they could handle and chased them all the way to the wire before falling just short in 8:00.27. That team will likely reassemble later in the season for another shot at the Cubs as well as the PVHS school record of 7:56 shared by teams from 1988 and 1990. Courtney Daly took second in the girls varsity pole vault in 9'6". Maile Davis was fourth in the girls varsity long jump with a mark of 15'1".

Weaver also won the 400m and took second in the high jump for a whopping 18 point day. The PV boys throwers also did well, with Austin McGibbon winning the discus with a nice throw of 122', with Matt Misetich third in 93'8", and Will Ricci taking second in the shot put in 40'5"; Chloe Solandt also scored for the girls in both throws. Rebecca Mehra won the loaded girls varsity 800m in a brisk 2:18. Otherwise the Sea Kings mostly found it tough going at the Seahawk Bowl and Redondo won all four divisions convincingly.
Meet results are being transcribed and will be on Edline. The Sea Kings are at Mira Costa on Saturday for the Mustang Relays. The following week is spring break week leading up to the prestigious Arcadia Invitational.

March 24, 2012 -- Update -- Sea Kings Turn In Stellar Performances At California Relays, Azusa Meet of Champions
The Sea Kings split the squad this weekend, and a break in the weather provided a great opportunity for the Sea Kings to shine on a couple of big early season stages.
At the California Relays, held at Cerritos College, Avery Durko and Brendan Weaver kicked things off with nice results in the 300m hurdles. Durko recorded a big PR of 49.23 to take fourth in the A heat and fifth overall for small schools (Divs. III-IV) girls varsity. Brendan Weaver then followed that up with a blistering 39.55 for second place in small schools boys varsity (by a mere .03) and yet another improvement to his own school record in that event. Courtney Daly won the small schools girls varsity pole vault and Brooke Bessen took third, vaulting 9'6" and 8'6", respectively. The girls varsity 4x200m team (Megan Wooley, Avery Durko, Candace Johnson, and Julia Milliken) took third place in girls varsity small schools, and Wooley and Johnson looked sharp in the 400 (60.93 for Wooley) and 200 (26.87 for Johnson) later in the day.
Elsewhere, at the Azusa Meet of Champions, the Sea Kings distance squad took full advantage of an all-day distance carnival to lay down literally dozens of personal bests among a whopping sixty-seven Palos Verdes races. Cassidy Weber, Lauren Gagnon, and Skyler Thiel all went under 11:30 in the 3200m. Daniel Rieger had a terrific double going 9:44.79 for 3200m and 4:31.05 for 1600m. Zach Diaz won his 1600m heat in 4:31.78. Jonah Diaz went 4:17.01 for a full mile in the "Dream Mile" shooting for a trip to New York later in the year. Kylie Butler improved slightly on her 800 PR with a 2:19.51, holding her own in the A heat of the 800m.
This coming Thursday the Sea Kings continue Bay League competition with a dual meet at Redondo under the lights starting at 6 pm.

Update -- March 20, 2012 -- Blazing Hurdles and Double Winners Highlight Mira Costa @ Palos Verdes Dual Meet
The expected marquee hurdles matchup of Mira Costa senior Kyle Hubbard and Palos Verdes junior Brendan Weaver lived up to the billing with the duo splitting the races in outstanding early season times. Weaver won the 110 high hurdles in a blistering 14.60 seconds with Hubbard just a step behind, then Hubbard returned the favor later in the meet by winning the 300h in a very fine 38.63 with Weaver right behind. Both winning times were new era PVHS facility records. The rest of the varsity boys meet largely went the Mustangs' way despite a nice 800 effort from Justin Unno and Jonah Diaz for second and third places in a very fast boys 800m and Austin McGibbon winning the discus.
On the girls side of the meet the team competition was extremely close with the Lady Mustangs pulling away to a 75-61 victory only at the very end with a sweep in the 3200 meters and a victory in the 4x400m relay. Ashlee Dotson starred for Mira Costa winning the 100m and 200m and anchoring the 4x400m relay team to victory and Acacia Moore won both hurdles races. For Palos Verdes, Rebecca Mehra won the 800m and 1600m races, Cate Ryant won the long jump and triple jump, and Megan Wooley won the 400m and led the 4x100m relay team (Wooley, Durko, Johnson, Ryant) to a win with a very fast opening leg. Courtney Daly continued her fine pole vault season taking first place and a share of the new era PVHS facility record with a vault of 9'0".
Mira Costa also won both frosh-soph divisions convincingly but there were some bright spots for PV, including Anthony Alvarado in the short sprints, Madison Richards in the long jump, and good results from the distances. Freshman Kevin Weaver also scored a varsity point taking third place in the long jump.
Event results are being summarized and will be linked on Edline.
The Sea Kings split the squad this coming weekend with the distances seeking fame and fortune at the Azusa distance carnival while select sprinters and hurdlers will compete at the California Relays at the legendary Cerritos College facility.

Update -- March 1, 2012 -- Palos Verdes and Culver City Split Highly Competitive Season Opening Dual Meet
Palos Verdes and Culver City have a longstanding tradition of opening the season against one another in nonleague action. Year after year the meets are always thrilling and this year was no exception.
On the boys side, superstar hurdlers senior Lucas Nozick from Culver City and junior Brendan Weaver from Palos Verdes were one of the marquee matchups of the day. Nozick drew first blood in winning the 110 high hurdles in an impressive time of 15.20, but Weaver roared back in the 300 hurdles to win in 40.09, a new PVHS school record, and also won the high jump. But Nozick enjoyed the last laugh, as the meet came down to the final event, the 4x400 meter relay, and Nozick blazed to a 49.9 second opening leg to open a gap the Sea Kings could never close and clinch a 70-64 win for Culver City. Other notable efforts for PV included senior distance stars Justin Unno dropping down to win the 400 meters in a solid 52.84 seconds and Daniel Rieger switching focus entirely to take second in the triple jump.
For the girls, Palos Verdes vaulters Courtney Daly, Aleen Gordon, and Brooke Bessen led the way to a 79-53 win with a sweep of the pole vault highlighted by Daly's new PVHS school record vault of 10'0". Senior distance ace Rebecca Mehra added to her growing legend with two stirring come from behind efforts in the 400 meters and as anchor in the 4x400 meter relay. Mehra won the 400 meters in 59.09 seconds and ran another 59 second split to win the relay for PV after gutsy legs from Avery Durko, Kylie Butler, and Candace Johnson kept PV in range of the strong Culver City female sprint crew. Other noteworthy efforts for PV included Cate Ryant winning the triple jump and placing second in the 100 meters, and Julia Milliken winning the high jump after joining the team only weeks ago.
Culver City also won the mutually understaffed frosh-soph girls (66-42) and frosh soph boys (55-36) divisions. The Sea Kings are off this weekend and continue training with an eye towards competition later in the month.
As the Culver City meet was an away meet complete individual event results unfortunately were not available. Partial results are still being compiled and will be posted on Edline. |
Update - Feb. 26, 2012 - Jonah Diaz among nation's best with 4th place finish at prestigious Brooks PR Invitational; Sea Kings prepare to open the 2012 season.
Senior Jonah Diaz left no doubt that he is ready to take his place among the nation's best 3200 meter runners this season, going toe to toe with some of the best runners from across the country gathered at the Brooks PR Invitational held at the University of Washington. In the end Jonah finished an impressive fourth with a blistering early season time of 9:03.44 for a full two miles on an indoor track.
Meanwhile, the rest of the Sea Kings spent the weekend preparing for the official opening of the 2012 outdoor CIF season with the annual nonleague dual meet against Culver City on March 1. The meet is at Culver City this year and will start at 2:45 pm. |

Palos Verdes HS junior multi-event superstar Brendan Weaver opened his 2012 competition year with a tremendous two-event performance today at Paramount HS in the Los Angeles Region qualifying meet for the California State Indoor HS Meet to be held on January 21 in Fresno. In the 55 meter hurdles, Brendan recorded a whopping personal best, knocking over 1.3 seconds off his previous fastest time to finish in 8.12 seconds to finish second and qualify automatically as one of the top three fastest finishers in the Los Angeles Region. Then Brendan qualified automatically for the high jump with a fine early-season leap of 6'3", placing third and meeting the automatic qualifying standard. Brendan finished his 2011 campaign ranked among the top ten sophomores statewide in the 110m hurdles, the 300m hurdles, and the high jump, and appears poised to equal or better that success this season. |
