Two South Bay freshmen shot to the top of the leaderboard at Tuesday's CIF Northern Individual Regional at Soule Park Golf Course in Ojai.
Palos Verdes' Elizabeth Doty and Torrance's Anne Cheng each shot 1-under-par 71s to finish tied for fourth, leading a group of nine South Bay qualifiers to the CIF Individual finals Nov.12 at the Talega Golf Course in San Clemente.
Doty eagled the No.11 hole for her first high school eagle and had a birdie and two bogeys.
"She just played to her potential," Palos Verdes coach Ray Rivera said. "This was the strongest high school field she faced. She's just a freshman, but she's played in national tournaments. She's played under pressure."
Cheng shot seven birdies, but had a double bogey on the par-5 No.10 hole and four bogeys.
"I asked her how it was going, and she said `Not good.' Then I looked at her score at the end and she was 1-under," Torrance coach Cean Geronimo said. "That's going to happen, an up-and-down, up-and-down round like that. She stuck to her game plan, and the impressive part is that she's a freshman."
Other local qualifiers included Peninsula's Kristin Coleman (73), Jenny Coleman (74) and Katia Joo (74), Torrance's Rochelle Chan (74), Michele Chun (75) and Chae Won Park (79) and North Torrance's Alice Geong (81).
