Prep-JC Roundup: Freshmen Cheng, Doty
steal show at individual golf regionals

Daily Breeze: From staff reports; Posted: 11/03/2009 11:51:28 PM PST

Two South Bay freshmen shot to the top of the leaderboard at Tuesday's CIF Northern Individual Regional at Soule Park Golf Course in Ojai.

Palos Verdes' Elizabeth Doty and Torrance's Anne Cheng each shot 1-under-par 71s to finish tied for fourth, leading a group of nine South Bay qualifiers to the CIF Individual finals Nov.12 at the Talega Golf Course in San Clemente.

Doty eagled the No.11 hole for her first high school eagle and had a birdie and two bogeys.

"She just played to her potential," Palos Verdes coach Ray Rivera said. "This was the strongest high school field she faced. She's just a freshman, but she's played in national tournaments. She's played under pressure."

Cheng shot seven birdies, but had a double bogey on the par-5 No.10 hole and four bogeys.

"I asked her how it was going, and she said `Not good.' Then I looked at her score at the end and she was 1-under," Torrance coach Cean Geronimo said. "That's going to happen, an up-and-down, up-and-down round like that. She stuck to her game plan, and the impressive part is that she's a freshman."

Other local qualifiers included Peninsula's Kristin Coleman (73), Jenny Coleman (74) and Katia Joo (74), Torrance's Rochelle Chan (74), Michele Chun (75) and Chae Won Park (79) and North Torrance's Alice Geong (81).

11th Place out of 18 quality golf teams that finished 3rd place or better in their leagues.

I would like to say that I am very proud of these girls. This was a course that none of them had played before and 3 players, (Wilcox, Merda, and Spirito) had their all time low 18 hole scores. We beat North Torrance by 49 shots and compared to other teams that played in the CIF Eastern Divisional at Seven Hills Golf Course, our team total was much lower (Mira Costa 472 and West Torrance 476).

Coach Ray Rivera's PVHS Girls' Golf team holds 2nd place in the Ocean League right now. They have also qualified for CIF, which they have not done since the school reopened.

On October 22nd they played in the Knabe Cup Tournament at Lakewood Country Club and came in 12th place. They were 31 teams and 119 players. Our players were Freshmen Jacqueline Cootes who shot 84. Junior Ally Wilcox who shot 91. Seniors Julia Logsdon shot 91 and Chanel Chen shot 96. The girls did a fantastic job!!
