CIF State Qualifier

Palos Verdes girls 1 stroke short of making state golf tournament.

http://www.dailybreeze.com/preps/ci_21885417/prep-jc-roundup-palos-verdes-girls-1-stroke

A season that saw the Lady Sea Kings ascend to soaring heights, came to a heartbreaking conclusion yesterday.  The Girls Golf Team fell short of advancing to the state qualifying event by one stroke.  The top 5 teams were separated by a mere six (6) strokes.  The team was led by E. Doty, N. Mu, S. Bergland & M. Perez.  In a heart wrenching elimination, the Lady Sea Kings should be proud of the fact that this season they accomplished so much:

  • Won the Triton Rainbow Sandals event, beating the State champions by 10 strokes
  • Won the Palm Desert Invitational by a whopping margin of victory
  • Repeated as Ocean League Co Champions
  • Won the CIF Central Team Divisional for the program’s first ever CIF title

It has been a pleasure to witness the progress & numerous highs of this program for the past three years!!!!  We wish nothing but continued, positive success to all the Sea King Seniors as they continue on in their academic & athletic walks of life.  It’s been a fabulous ride…

CIF Southern Section Northern Division Individual Regionals Par-72 Vineyard Course at the River Ridge Golf Course in Oxnard Elizabeth Doty & Natalie Mu advanced past stage 1 of the CIF Southern Section Northern Division Individual Regionals shooting 70 & 72 respectively.  Roxanne Matta’s 81 missed the cut line by 2 strokes.  For Ocean League co-champion Palos Verdes, Doty advances to the CIF Individuals final for the fourth consecutive year and Mu advances for the first time.

"This is back-to-back years that we've had two girls advance to the finals," Palos Verdes coach Ray Rivera said.

PVHS Girls Golf champions 2012It was a tough scoring day out there, but thanks to Elizabeth Doty's stellar low round of the day (69) plus Natalie Mu & Mackenzie Perez efforts, the Lady Sea Kings conquered the CIF Central Division Team title yesterday. Round two of Team play will find them in Temecula next week looking to continue their quest towards the State Final in November.

It was something of a South Bay invasion at Monday's CIF Southern Section Central Division Team Championships at Los Serranos Country Club in Chino Hills, but it was Palos Verdes that ultimately stole the show.
Thanks to Elizabeth Doty, who along with Torrance's Anne Cheng posted the top individual score of the day at 5-under-par 69, Palos Verdes scored 393 team points to take first place and capture the program's first CIF championship.
South Bay teams claimed the top four spots with Mira Costa (403) in second place, North Torrance (411) in third and Torrance (418) in fourth place.
All four teams advanced to next Monday's CIF Team Qualifier at 8 a.m. at The Legends Golf Course in Temecula.

This event was formerly known as the CIF-SS Team Finals.
"It's the greatest feeling in the world to win our first CIF championship with this group of girls," Palos Verdes coach Ray Rivera said.
Doty had six birdies and a bogey en route to her 69. Natalie Mu shot a 74 and Mackenzie Perez shot a 77 for Torrance.
"To have your No. 1 player always put you near or under par is such a blessing," Rivera said.

JV Results:   Torrance

The JV squad lost a couple of tough matches this week to Torrance.  Torrance made life difficult for our Lady Linksters on Monday, but yesterday's match found the JV team making it a very competitive match on their home course of Terranea where they pulled within 3 strokes of matching their opponent.

Coach Wilson stated: "Close, but no cigar. We were a lot more competitive this time around, though. Heavy wind and really fast greens today...tough conditions".

The Varsity squad remained undefeated in league play sweeping their matches vs. Torrance last week.  Thursday’s match found our Lady Sea Kings at the Palos Verdes GC pitted against the South Bay’s historical powerhouse team.  After defeating Torrance earlier in the week, the Sea Kings returned to their home links looking for the sweep.  The team found itself down one of their starting five as Natalie Mu nursed an injury looking to heal in time for next week’s league championship showdown against N. Torrance. Once again the team found add’l depth on its’ roster as Payton Valle came through with her strongest performance of the season & contributed an excellent round of 40, helping the team defeat Torrance.

THAT WAS CLOSE!!!

Yesterday, the Lady Sea Kings held on to defeat perennial state power Torrance & remain undefeated in both league and season matches.  The Sea Kings were down a starting player to injury, but were provided an outstanding effort by Leslie Robertshaw when they really needed it.  The victory takes Torrance out of the league equation and now leaves next week’s matches against North Torrance as the determining factor in who will be crowned Ocean League Champs.

Mackenzie Perez and Sophie Bergland shot 39s for Palos Verdes. Roxanne Matta shot 41, and Leslie Robertshaw shot 42 for PV (11-0, 7-0).

Both Varsity & JV Squads swept their respective series this week.  Varsity defeated Beverly Hills twice this while our JV Squad also duplicated their winning ways versus West Torrance High at the Terranea GC.

GIRLS' GOLF: Palos Verdes defeats Notre Dame in rematch of Southern Section finals - Led by Perez carding 2-under 33, Sea Kings have four scores in 30s to defeat Knights 184-207

PALOS VERDES -- Notre Dame produced one of the most impressive seasons in local girls' golf last year, including a Northern Team Divisional title and a fifth-place finish at the Southern Section final.
But the Knights want to raise the bar this season in pursuit of their first berth in the CIF/WSCGA regional tournament, which created the motivation to face Palos Verdes -- third at last year's final -- in a nonleague match Thursday.
Led by a 2-under 33 from Mackenzie Perez -- with four birdies -- and four scores in the 30s, the Sea Kings prevailed 184-207 at Palos Verdes Golf Club, reminding Notre Dame of the kind of effort it will take in order to reach its goal in October.
"We were certainly hoping to pull together and win, but that doesn't always happen," said Notre Dame senior Tina Nagai, who shot 38.
"We learned so much from playing against them because they're such great golfers. This is definitely going to help us a lot more in the long run."
Elizabeth Doty shot 35, Sophie Bergland carded a 36, Natalie Mu posted a 39 and Roxanne Matta had a 41 for Palos Verdes (4-0), which returned five golfers from last year's group that placed fifth at the regional final.
"We were really fired up to play them because they are so amazing," Nagai said. "They're at the level we want to reach."

Katelyn Reynolds carded a 39, Arielle Valdez shot 40, with Lauren Crittenden and Sammy Winchester both adding 45s for the Knights.

2012 Season Preview

Coach Rivera's Lady Sea Kings return 6 of their top 7 Varsity players from last year's CIF winning ways with their eye on the prize of advancing to the 2012 State Finals in No. Calf. The Lady Sea Kings came within strokes of advancing to the State Championships last year & were a legitimate top 5 California team throughout last season. Our varsity members are all legitimate college level prospects not to mention excellent students resulting in their CIF Academic recognition. Both the Varsity & JV Ladies worked hard throughout the off season, playing in both regional & prestigious national level tour events such as the AJGA, SCPGA Toyota Tour & JAGS venues. The reigning Ocean League Co Champs are poised to advance deep in the post season & look forward to a successful campaign. The Sea Kings will face plenty of tough local competition from throughout the South Bay & the CIF So. Section (toughest in Calf) as many teams return most of their starters & will look to dethrone us.

We also welcome our new JV Coach, Mr. Chris Wilson who looks to lead our new incoming talent as a future supply line to what has become one of So. California's premier teams.

Please get behind us & support both of our teams as we launch into our new season!
