Mission Statement
PVHS Tri-MPalos Verdes High School Tri-M Music Honor Society is an international honors society, part of MENC, and a service organization of the music department.  Our goal is to increase student and school involvement with music and to build a stronger, more unified school music program.  We also do service for the community, usually through music-related activities, which shows the school and community the importance of music in our lives.  Tri-M also provides an opportunity for all members of the music program to work together toward common goals.  Tri-M gives its members the chance to learn new skills by participating in service activities and taking leadership of chapter projects.

Tri-M Member Rules  PDF

Tri-M members are chosen by the advisor of the chapter, Ms. Parkinson. The number of students admitted into PVHS Tri-M is capped to roughly 20% the total number of music department members. Tri-M members are considered the “ASB” of the music department. They chair and recruit department members for committees such as the fundraising committee, concerts committee, social committee, gigs committee, and mentoring committee.
Minimum qualifications for application are:

  • have a love of music
  • sophomore, junior, senior standing
  • minimum GPA of 3.0
  • be a student in a music class
  • do volunteer work for the department
  • have a good attitude, be responsible, and communicate well with others

In order to stay in Tri-M, a member must:

  • complete the minimum service hours (10 per semester)
  • be active on at least one committee
  • have a good participation grade in music class/maintain good citizenship in music class
  • maintain the minimum GPA
  • attend all meetings unless excused

By-Laws, rules concerning probation, and other information are given to members each new school year in a “Tri-M Leadership Packet.” Members are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the information contained in it.

2009-2010 Tri-M Goals

Each year, the Tri-M president sets goals for his/her term.  2009-2010 Co-Presidents, Jennifer Hong and Michael Hsiung have set two main goals for this school year.  First, they have decided to continue the lofty goals set by their immediate predecessors, one of which is to embolden Tri-M and the music department students to take on more responsibility in what gets done in the department.  In order to do this, they have refined the committee format that their predecessors initiated. Their second main goal is to more actively reach out to the community.  To this end, they with their Tri-M Committee Chairs have set up mentoring sessions at PVIS for jazz ensembles, string instruments and pep band, are looking into donating used instruments to a needy school, and are looking into giving small recitals at retirement homes.
